In an age when bands are very much in DIY mode, Pre-Sleep Monologue from Shrewsbury take DIY to a whole new level. Starting with its home-made album covers of corrugated cardboard and marker pen to the custom made guitars and effects pedals, Pre-Sleep Monologue produces a truly unique sound from the groovy and sultry “Dirty Love” to a blues-laced and spacey “Mud”.
Katy Caldecott on vocals and bass dips in and out of emotional styles from the breathy, hopeless despair to a banshee like rock chick. Toby Carter on guitars provides more melodic, dark vocals against the richer tapestry of Caldecott but his real offering in the band is his experimental approach to guitar playing.
Live, the band is writhing, heavy and loud with fuzzy guitar solos and intricate, spunky lyrics.
No song from Pre-Sleep Monologue sounds quite like the one before…but if you like influences of Neil Young, Deep Purple, The White Stripes, Jewel and anything dripping in acidy psychedelic blues and poetic rock, then you will like these guys.
